IT security in the home office: How to tell if your devices have been hacked

Not all companies were prepared for the rapid switch to the home office. Today, one day after the relaxation of the COVID-19 measures by the Federal Council, many companies are talking about continuing their changed way of working and increasingly letting their employees work in a home office. Regardless of whether in the office or home office; security should not be sacrificed. In this blog post, you'll learn how to tell if your devices have been hacked and what you can do to secure them.

Trend Micro is an international provider of server, network and endpoint security software and services with a 30-year vision of making the world safe for the exchange of digital information. The company has been recognized as a global leader in server security since 2010.

Smart Home Network (SHN) Shows Significant Increase in Infections and Attacks on Systems and Networked Devices

In their Smart Home Network (SHN), Trend Micro found a significant increase in attacks on remote systems and networked devices. The analysis below shows a comparison of the months of December 2018, January 2019, February 2019 and March 2019 with the months of December 2019, January 2020, February 2020 and March 2020, clearly showing that the number of incoming infections and attack attempts on desktops and laptops, for example, has increased by nearly 450%.

Infections and attacks without obvious signs: How to recognize symptoms

Especially in the last few months, the number of attacks with coronavirus-related messages also increased. Some malicious routines do not show obvious signs of infection or intrusion, and some symptoms become visible only after certain user actions. Still, users can easily find out if their devices have been hacked or infected with malware. Trend Micro has created a flyer for this purpose.

How to ensure IT security in the home office

In the blog post from March 23, 2020, we already wrote about the most important measures that should be taken in the short term to ensure IT security in the home office. In the longer term, we recommend a sustainable enterprise solution that ensures IT security both in the office and in the home office. In cooperation with Trend Micro, we offer the following solutions for this purpose:

  • Trend Micro’s endpoint solutions like Apex One and Worry-Free™ Business Security protect endpoints (clients running Windows / Mac, Windows Server, mobile devices) with advanced technologies and automatic detection and defense against threats.
  • As an additional layer of defense, Trend Micro™ Email Security can thwart spam and other email attacks. The protection is constantly updated to protect the system from both old and new attacks. A solution for MS Exchange or on-premises hardware is also part of the portfolio.
  • For protection of Office 365, Sharepoint online, Exchange online, Teams, OneDrive, Dropbox and Google, Trend Micro offers Trend Micro Cloud App Security a key pillar of a security strategy.
  • Whether the server is on-premise, virtual, or in the cloud; comprehensive protection is critical to safeguarding data. Trend Micro Deep Security is a specialized solution that provides malware protection as well as a comprehensive solution against vulnerabilities.
  • Trend Micro is ranked as the company with the largest market share in security for hybrid cloud workloads in November 2019.  Trend Micro XDR (Detection & Response) provides the ability to properly analyze events and detect threats in a timely manner so that proper action can be taken.
